Applets on FreeBSD

I have a fresh install of FreeBSD 4.7 and all the monitoring only
applets, such as the ones to monitor the CPU, Ethernet, and other such
devices always crash on startup.
Anyone run into this and can give me any hints as to where to even start
to look as to a cause?
