RE: Gnome startup problems

I just read a solution in the comments on debianplanet... "Bates"
posts:

I've discovered a temporary workaround. If you put
the following line at the beginning of the Gnome
gdm script, you will get most of your functionality
(except nautilus, it doesn't seem to work, so you
  will have to kill it):

  bonobo-activation-emtpy-server &

Hope this helps others who have been bitten.

The "Gnome gdm script" he's talking about is /etc/gdm/Sessions/Gnome -
just stick that line in at the beginning and you should be able to log
in to GNOME again (worked for me).

I just read on www.debianplanet.org tonight (just AFTER I did a
dist-upgrade) that the latest bonobo-activation and libbonobo-activation
packages in Sid/Unstable are broken. This appears to be the cause of
your problem (and now mine as well).

Their suggestion is to downgrade to version 1.0.3 of those packages,
but I've read on the debian-gtk-gnome mailing list that downgrading
causes various other serious problems. It looks like the best thing to
do may be wait for a real fix. <sigh>
