Can't connect to Sawfish

Hi all,
 Running GNOME 1.4 I cant get at the config for Sawfish. Running it 
from the term I get:
**Error: Can't conect to sawfish on display, :0
Sawfish is up and running fine. I tried changing $DISPLAY to my 
hostname:1, but this had no
effect on the error.
It works when runnong a root session!

Anybody know a quick fix??
