gnome 2 panel

Hi 

  For several years, i used gnome and recently i make jump to G2. I get
and compiled it with cvs code. 
  I would like put a question or to formulate a proposal about panel and
it's menu. Why not implemented the menu with gconf instead .desktop files?
That to largely improve its configuration for the user.
  
  I'll would like too thanks all gnome develloper for theirs excellent and
good job.
