Sounds like your PAM setup may be incorrect; in /etc/pam.d/gdm is the
PAM setup for GDM (this is assuming Slackware uses PAM... I haven't used
Slackware in some time).  Specifically, check the auth lines.  They
should be similar to (or exactly like) the auth lines in, for example,
/etc/pam.d/login.

If you have an exotic authentication system (LDAP, NIS, etc.) you have
to be a bit more careful, just as a warning.
