Unstable gimp version 1.2.1?

Hi, I am running gimp 1.2.1 on Redhat 7.2, I cant recall if it's gimp
from ximian or the default shipped with rh7.2. 

Anyway, I was wondering if this version is more unstable than normal.  I
am not a big user of teh gimp, but needed to play with some pictures the
last two days and have had it crash on me about 7 or 8 times.  Once it
even lost all it's settings. 

If it's a normally stable version i'll submit some bug reports but I
dont really want to wast people
