Can't get sounds

I have Gnome 1.4 installed and running but I get no sounds.  I have
checked the hardware by cat'ing a .au file to /dev/audio, and after a
bit of poking around I was able to get the esd daemon running, but I
still get no sound from the control center.

When I ran esd from the cammand line I got some messages about it
trying various formats (I have an old SoundBlaster Pro so the 16bit
44.1 kHz formats failed) and then a series of beeps that didn't end
until I killed the process.
