Gnome & type-2-fonts

Is there a way to make gnome 1.4 to display truetype fonts?
When opening a gnome-program (gimp,gedit...) and try to access the fonts
it say "this is a 2-byte-font and may not be shown correctly" on all
truetype fonts.
Opening a non gnome-app (koword,emacs...) the fonts works without any
problems.
