autogen.sh failes to ident automake

I can't compile gtk+ (as well as all other things) that i got from 
cvs....everything is stucked on autogen.sh.. is says that my automake is too 
old...

You must have automake 1.4-p1 installed to compile Gtk+.
Get ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/automake/automake-1.4-p1.tar.gz

But I have  automake  1.7!!

What's the problem then? How can I compile the source?
