building control-center from source

Hello,
I know this problem has been addressed before on the mailing list but I 
can't seem to find a solution. I'm trying to build gnome 1.4 from source 
because i don't trust apt-get (sorry heh it screwed up things another 
time before but thats a different story) however while compiling control 
center I recieved the following error:

esound is installed correctly as far as Iknow,
macado:~# esd-config  --version
0.2.24  
I've tried other versions of esound as well with no luck, as well as 
other versions of control-center in the gnome-2.4.x tree all seem to 
fail on that error

unimportant stuff
distro is Progeny 1.0 (upgraded to Debian 3.0 using dist-upgrade) and 
kernel is 2.4.18
gcc version is 2.95.4

any help would greatly be appreciated
