gdm 2.2.2.1 barfing .... again! :(

This is so frustrating.  gdm has, after several months of good behavior,
started an old trick.  Upon first log in, it barfs, tosses me back to
the login in box.  Second login works.  I'm running
gdm-2.2.2.1-ximian.12 .  Is this a bug in this fairly new release?

The only system like stuff I've done since this started is a small edit
in rc.sysinit and rc.local...all non X stuff.
