only root can launch a gnome session

Hi everyone,
I have a little problem with gnome 1.2 : only root can start a gnome
session.
if a simple user tries to, gnome hangs when executing gnome-smproxy.
the error message is the following :
"Gnome error : file gnome-exec.c : line 163 (gnome execute async with
env fds)
assertion failed (stdin >=0)"

What could be the problem?
