GAL compile

I have downloaded the Abiword-Gnome 0.9.5.RPM, but when I installed it, the 
error messaage came up that it was missing GAL.so.18. SuSE 7.3 only has 
GAL 1.0, so I went on to the Gnome site and downloaded GAL.1.8.1.tar.gz. But 
I can't compile it!

I have eventually sorted all the ./configure errors out, but then MAKE gets 
part way through and stops. The last part of the log shows the following 
error message:

LD is an executable file.

I do not know how to get any further. Please can someone advise?
