mailcheck applet in IMAP mode sometimes crashes panel

I may be wrong, but it looks like the (panel-1.2.4) will sometimes crash
when the "Mailcheck" applet looks for new messages on an IMAP server.
I'm not sure about the exact conditions, as this does not happen on
every check.

Has anyone else seen this? Is there an alternative to the gnome-core
Mailcheck when using an IMAP server?
