HELP I've got NO devices on my desktop

I am using Gnome and I am very satisfied with it.

BUT:

How can I add an mountable device to my desktop (CD-ROM, VFAT Partitions,
Floppy???) . The Manual says Gnome will do that automatically but it doesn't.

I am using Slackware 7.1
