locked out of linux

hi all..

  i've even gone so far as to use toms boot disk and it refuses to
cooperate saying kernel panic?
and author seems to think i might have ram issue.....dunno i seem to
have no trouble in windows although i've heard linux is more apt to show
troubled hardware first......anyway to "verify" this possibility..

also......when computer boots....the monitor just keeps refreshing
(clicking ) likely due to a bad? xconfig-4 file?....i tried
controll-alt-F3 and it won't halt it.......if i can just halt that i
might be able to   get in to fix things......
