This is not a GNOME question.  Please read the man pages for details
on how Xdefaults work.  Start with X11, xrdb etc.

In any case, the way settings in .Xdefaults work is that they *do*
override the defaults.  Perhaps the missing "s" at the end of your
file name might be the reason why it doesn't work ... or is that just
a typo in your email?
