different backgrounds in each desktop

Redhat 7.1; gnome 1.4; Enlightenment 16.4

I have multiple desktops with a different background in each and wish
to keep this arrangement.

I would like to try giving mouse clicks in the root window to nautilus
(I realize nautilus uses buttons 1 & 3 and that button 2 remains with
enlightenment).  In nautilus I have tried 

    preferences --> Edit Preferences --> Windows & Desktop -->
    use nautilus to draw the desktop

However, when I do this I have been unable to give each desktop a
different background.  Whenever I change the background it changes in
all desktops.
