Two things that may help:

First, the wonderful xkeycaps program, which many distros ship. If
not, find it at http://www.jwz.org/xkeycaps/ and grab it. It's great.
It's not a Gnome program, so you have to keep the mouse button pressed
to go down the menus and so on.

Second, there are Gnome applets which might help.
gkb is the Gnome keyboard switcher. It had a Hungarian keyboard
layout last time I looked. For people who haven't used this before, be
warned: it doesn't remember what you started with. I have a UK keyboard.
I decided to play with gkb. I got a choice between US keyboard and
Hungarian. I tried to cancel and couldn't get back to my UK layout :)
I don't think this will matter for anyone wanting Hungarian or US,
but I have never dared try it to find out what others it supports now.
It is part of gnome-applets.
gSwitchIt is a similar applet which I have not tried. It is
available at http://gswitchit.sourceforge.net which has some notes
about setting up X to deal with your keyboard too.

I think gkb is getting a rewrite, btw, but I don't know how it
will change.
