Hi,

I spent the weekend trying to install the latest version of gnumeric on
my machine. I am running Linux RH6.2 on my old Tecra 730XCDT. Pentium
150Mhz, w/80MB RAM. Everything was working fine before I tried to
install it. The thing is that in order to install gnumeric, I found I
had to update a lot of packages and libraries and being inexperienced, I
just installed it to /usr/bin and /usr/lib overwriting whatever was
there before. Also due to my inexperience, I went and deleted the source
trees after I compiled each package and make install'd each package. If
I had not deleted the source trees, would I have been able to get back
my old binary and library files that I over-wrote in /usr/bin and
/usr/lib? 

Anyway the way I installed each of my packages was:
% CFLAGS=-O2 ./configure --prefix=/usr
% make
# make install

I did not run ldconfig after that (I only found out about it after
reading on the gnome page, I didn't see it mentioned when I read the
INSTALL files), so that may be part of my problem. 

I kept the .tgz files though, since they take less space, so at least I
know which packages I tried to install they are (not in order I
installed them):

I also seem to remember installing something called gdk-pixmaps and
another file I downloaded from the .../unstable/... directory in the
gnome ftp site. Maybe I deleted that tarball.

I made a couple of failed attempts to compile gnumeric inbetween the
compilation of all the above mentioned tarballs. gnumeric configure
would report I'm missing something, then I'd go download it, compile it
and try gnumeric again. The final result with gnumeric was that it said
I didn't have the Gnome Application libraries and I could not find them
on the gnome ftp site, so I couldn't even go all the way through and get
gnumeric working after all my trouble. 

Later, I found that my panel bar is missing some things, like the
tasklist, and my clocks so I have a hard time switching between
applications now, since I can't select them from the task list. I tried
adding new tasklists and adding clocks (by right clicking on the panel)
but nothing gets added. the only applets there are the main menu (the
gnome foot) netscape and the gnome terminal icon. When I try to add
something new, the applets on the panel shift a little bit as if
something small is being added, but nothing appears (they only shift by
maybe 5 pixels, a small ammount).

Also gmc crashed once, I can't remember what I was doing, playing with
the properties of the panel or something, and then I got a message
saying that gmc crashed. I did a ls -rt of my /usr/bin and /usr/lib
directories which show which files were updated during my attempted
installation. All the recently updated files, Apr 20, Apr 21 or Apr 22
were the ones created recently by me. I am pretty sure that one of these
files contains the problem for me. Attached are the relevant portions of
my usr/bin and usr/lib directories. 

Help will be appreciated.
