There is a file in you home directory called .xinitrc.  In this file
there is an exec line.
For X to start gnome then the line sould read 'exec gnome-session' and
for kde the line would read 'exec startkde'.  This is a nice easy way
to do it in all flavors of UNIX that I have seen.
