Assuming this is gnome-terminal, there is also one other thing to
check: gnome-terminal supports the --login and --nologin arguments.
The --login argument means "run all the startup scripts" (ie, your
.profile as well as your .bashrc/.kshrc). The --nologin argument
means, urr, "don't do that" :) I can't remember which is the default,
but you can either use gnome-terminal --login or you can set it 
as the default via the Preferences dialogue box.
