Gnome and Window Manager

I think I've problem making Window Managers connecting with Gnome-session.
All window manager does not work, including E and Sawmill.
What is the mechanism of gnome-session connecting with WM?
What domain or hosts it try first?
How can I check what is the problem and solve that?
