Gnome runs but nothing APPEARS on screen

I have built the gnome binaries under AIX 4.3.2 but nothing appears on the screen.  I can see the binaries taking time when I do a 'ps' but nothing appears on the screen.  I have the DISPLAY set correctly as I can run other X based apps with no problems.  Below is a sample of the 'ps':

I do know that the process is gaining time.

Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on ??
