Too radical, "telinit 3" is more than enough.

>echo GNOME > /etc/sysconfig/desktop

Of course, all this must be done in a text console (Ctrl-Alt-F#, with # a
number like 1, -> F1 key) logged as root (or su root, specially if via
telnet or ssh).
