Try putting exec flag
  chmod +x .Xclients
Or in .xsession file
my .xsesion have this:

  export LANG=es_ES
  exec gnome-session
-------
[mega]$ ls -l .xsession
-rwx--x--x   1 mega     mega           36 Jan 18 12:38 .xsession
