GIMP is spooking me out...

First off, let me say that my x-server is from XiG graphics, not from
Xfree86. I have an ATI Rage Fury 128 Pro. XFree86, to my knowledge, only
supports the ATI Rage Fury 128 (sans Pro). So I'm kinda stuck here.
That being said, GIMP is really weirding out on me. I know this is a gnome
list, but I did get this GIMP from helix code....if this is truly the
wrong forum for this, please point me in the right direction...
So...I create a new image, make some scribbles, and then save the
masterpiece as an Encapsulated PostScript. Fine. I then exit GIMP. I then
restart it, load up the same scribbles, make some more
scribles, then choose "Save As" (not "Save") off the menu. I try to "Save"
the scribbles "As" the original file, but when I do....KAZOOM!!! the
entire screen explodes in funky text colors and either
1. Stays in funky color mode. From what I can tell, I am now in text mode,
because I can make out the indiviual text cells on the screen. It's almost
as if the x server died a horrible and violent death and the system never
fully recoverd...and the colors are the aftermath...
2. Logs me out, after I see the funky colors. I then need to reboot, or
else my system will be unstable, i.e. if I don't reboot, the system will
log me out at random intervals, with no provocation, in a flurry of funky
colors...
I should mention that this only happens when I mess around with PostScript
files in the GIMP. If I try the same thing with, say, PNG or BMP files, in
the GIMP, then things seems to go alright...
Could this be a bug with the x-server? I'm very unfamiliar with x-windows
architecture...what possible bug in the GIMP or the x-server could
possibly cause the x-server to die so horribly and completely?
While I'm on the topic, I really do need to be able to manipiulate
encapsulated Postscript files. Can someone tell me how to make
Encapsulated Postscript files from regular images (say, PNG or JPG)
without going through the GIMP?
Thanks all...I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this...
