This is probably not helpful, but I had an idea once that goes much further.
The idea is to allow in-place editing of translated strings in a live UI.
For the interface to this operation, I'd imagined a translation "wand" or
tool that you click the text with. I hadn't thought much about the back end,
but one can dream about some kind of translation server to which the user's
desktop would upload new translations and where people could argue over the
merits of different translations and resolve conflicts. The dynamic UI could
even contact the server for up-to-date translations, allowing translation to
be independant of the gnome packaging. This would allow nontechnical users
(and many language enthusiasts are nontechnical) to become translators and
it would facilitate the acceptance of just one or two translations from a
casual translator, where as today, the entire burden of translation
generally rests on the shoulders of the few who have really bothered to get
into it. It also gets rid of the difficulty translators have when faced with
a translation file: they can't always easily see in what context the string
should appear.

Perhaps someone intimately familiar with the structure of gnome and gtk+
could offer an opinion on how feasible this.

I would like to translate for gnome. But I donīt want to mess with
cvs.

Is it possible to create some kind of application like the helix
updater. I will chose the language and after being presented some 5-7
strings I will send back my translations (just like in bugbuddy).

Possible?
