help linux-newbie - stop gnome

Is it possible to stop gnome from running at boot time.
I tried "kill gpm" in a terminal window,  it stops but then it just
restarts right away.
I could find nothing in the RedHat FAQ, the Gnome site or the news
groups.
 I have RedHat 6.2.
