i can get the menu bar back easily but not the surrounding
borders. within the gnome-terminal preferences there is no option for
borders - or maybe i should say 'frames' not sure.

:Yes, hit the ctrl key and the right mouse button on the gnome-terminal.
:You'll have a menu with an option to put your border (called menubar) back.
