Sound works in ESD, not in GNOME

This has been round before, but still no solution...
On a Sparc 10MP/Solaris 2.6, latest release of everything, esdplay
produces sound, but GNOME sound events do not work at all.

With esd-0.2.17, esdplay <wavfile> works fine.

In Control Center, clicking the Play button produces no sound
(and no error).
Tracking sound-properties with gdb when I press Play gives:

Program received signal SIGPIPE, Broken pipe.

Can someone help me to pin down the cause of the error? What libraries
should I compile with -g? (please don't say "All of them", it takes
_ages_ on this machine...) Which package is at fault? It's like to
report this as a bug, but it's tricky when I don't know whether it's
audiofile, esd, gnome or whatever is at fault!

Continuing causes this error 14 times in total, before execution
resumes normally. Backtrace is:
