help with configuring gnome-session

hello,
I was wondering what lines do I add to my .xsession or .xinitrc for
gnome-session to work. what is the difference between .xinitrc and .xsession
anyway? and where are they usually located? Is .xsession the same as
Xsession file which is located in /etc/X11?
