can't find "libpixmap.so" module

I get:

>Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate loadable module in module_path:
>"libpixmap.so",

when running most gtk apps.

locate tells me I have:

>/usr/lib/gtk/themes/engines/libpixmap.so

but no other copy.

Where is the module_path defined, or what other fix may there be?
