xmms and gnome

I recently upgraded xmms to the 1.0.0 version.  Everything worked fine
before, but now when I'm playing an mp3, my panel locks sometimes
until I stop the mp3.  it's like my gnome sound events are fighting
with xmms.  Any ideas on how to get them to mix well?
