Duh I shoulda thought of that, so I tried it and now get:
error: failed dependencies:
        gnome-libs = 1.0.40 is needed by gnome-libs-devel-1.0.40-1

So then I tried:
# rpm -Uvh gnome-libs-devel-1.0.54-1.i386.rpm 
error: failed dependencies:
        gnome-libs = 1.0.54 is needed by gnome-libs-devel-1.0.54-1

...there must be an rpm that goes even first, like gnome-core file?
