GNOME terminal and Unix98 pty's

Hello everybody!

I'm having problems with the gnome terminal program (v. 1.0.7).
When I try to run it as a user other than root, I get a message
telling me an error occurred when trying to log in, probably due
to incorrectly configured Unix98 pty's.

Well, that may well be. They are not configured at all as I'm
still using the old style pty's. Does gnome-terminal require
that support for Unix98 pty's be enabled, or what else did I
get wrong?

Any help appreciated.
