Can't configure MIME types...

For some reason, editing MIME types from Control Center seems to
have no effect. I'm sure this *used* to work...

e.g. If I change "audio/x-mp3" to start xmms instead of mpg123,
~/.gnome/mime-info/user.keys contains:

audio/x-mp3:
	[en_UK]open=xmms %f

So far so good.

But double-clicking on an .mp3 file in mc causes it to open mpg123 !?

On a related note, changing the icon for "application/rtf" has no effect,
and is never saved (when I go back to control center, there is no icon
set). But again, ~/.gnome/mime-info/user.keys looks OK to me:

application/rtf:
	[en_UK]icon-filename=/usr/local/share/pixmaps/mc/gnome-textfile.png
	[en_UK]open=abiword %f

Am I being cluelees, or did something go wrong?
This is on Solaris, BTW.
