Are you using the commercial OSS drivers? I tried them out a while back
and got the same sort of errors with an Ensoniq AudioPCI card and
esound. I just pulled the most recent version off their web site
(version 393c), though, and the problem's gone. There seem to be some
bad interactions between the commercial OSS drivers, 8-bit wave files,
and esound (or audiofile?) though, because I get a clicking noise at the
end of all the GNOME system sounds that I didn't get with the kernel
drivers.
