core 1.0.55 compiling problem HELP!

using slackware 7.0 / i386
when i try to compile the gnome core 1.0.55 i get an error
concerning the xpm...
rather the configure tells me: checking for XpmFreeXpmImage in -lXpm...
(cached) no
but configure completes without error and when i make it fails when
getting to the xpm part.. i have xpm-v3.4k as im supposed to.. can
anyone help me??
