You should be able to get it to work by untaring the theme into
/usr/share/themes (depending on how yor system is set up). You'll have to
have write access to that directory to do that though.

As for the theme selector and the ``add new theme...'' feature, I've never
gotten it to work myself. I've always had the same problem you described.
