fonts and gnome-terminal

So I'm looking for a new font for use in gnome-terminal, and I've found
that some fonts I try, lucidabright for example, mess up the screen. If
I'm in pine for instance there will be a large blank space to the right
and redraws will totally mangle it. Is this something I'm doing wrong? Are
there some fonts that just won't work? For some reason it always seems to
be the ones I like...
