Gnome audio mixer

Quick question about the GNOME audio mixer. When I try to run it as a
user, I get the error, "Make sure you have sound compiled into the
kernel" but I can run it as root just fine. 

Also, I can play audio CD's as root or as a user. Is this a permission
or path issue here with the audio mixer?

Any help on this would be great!
