I'd recomend:
nice -n 19 /usr/X11R6/lib/xscreensaver/xmatrix -root
This will give it very low priority and really bearly slow down anything
else at all.
The effect is really cool. Thanks for bringing it up. I'd heard it could be
done but hadn't tried it :-)
