GMC ignoring user mime info

Hello, I am using the following:

gnome-core 1.2.1
gnome-libs 1.2.3
mc/gmc 4.5.51

on a Mandrake 7.1 system.  I have noticed that gmc is ignoring entries
in a user's ~/.gnome/mime-info/user.keys file.  Here is an excerpt from
one user's mime key file:

application/x-fig:
        [en]edit=xfig %f
        [en]icon-filename=/usr/local/share/icons/xfig.xpm
        [en]open=xfig %f
        [en]view=xfig %f

application/postscript:
        [en]icon-filename=/usr/local/share/icons/AdobePostscript.xpm
        [en]view=gv %f

application/x-staroffice-document:
        [en]edit=soffice %f
        [en]icon-filename=/usr/local/share/icons/staroffice2.tif
        [en]open=soffice %f
        [en]view=soffice %f

application/pdf:
        [en]icon-filename=/usr/local/share/icons/PDF.xpm
        [en]open=acroread %f
        [en]view=acroread %f

Some of these entries (staroffice and lyx) have corresponding entries in
the user.mime file, the rest are defined properly in the global
/usr/share/mime-info/gnome.mime file.

So why isn't gmc decorating files of these types with the chosen icons
(all of which exist and have 644 permissions)?  Even worse, why can't
gmc launch files of these types with the defined applications?  When I
double-click on a file of type pdf, lyx, sdc, or any others, I get a
dialog box asking me what I should open the file with.  Why isn't gmc
just following what's in these files?
