Installing Source Tarball on RedHat

I want to install up-to-date GNOME source tarballs on my RedHat machine ('cause
I'm sick of waiting 4 months for GuruLabs to update).  I know that by default
RedHat systems have GNOME installed in an unusual place.  Where is that place,
and how do I install the gnome-libs into that place?
