Virtual root windows are a bad idea because
- X clients are written with the assumption that there is only
One True root window.
- The X guys determined a long time ago that they can't be
done reliably without an X extension.
The new gnome-wm spec may solve these issues. If you want to fix
this, you should talk to the people who are working on the new window
manager specification.
