I have the same problem too.
I think I needs glibc-2.1.1 for it. configure always says yes to Unix98 ptys
for kernel 2.2. Once I have a system based on glibc-2.1.1(self compiled),
and -lpt works. But it is always hard to use a new libc for primary C
library.
