Gnome-WARNING **: error caching sample <-1>!

Trying to fix the sound on Solaris...

The latest esd-0.2.15 now plays sounds properly (YAY!).
eg: esdplay /usr/local/share/sounds/login.wav

Everything else is the current (1.0.50) release.

BUT: all I get from GNOME is loads of console messages about
"error caching sample". I see this on startup, and going to
Control Center and pressing "Play" gives the same message (though
the number cghanges - sometimes it's <4>, for example).

Questions:

Can I fix this? (sound has NEVER worked for me)

Which "package" is responsible for this message? (so I can report it
as a bug if necessary)

Now that esd works, I'm getting hopeful that soon I'll have sound...
