No save in Mandrake 6.1

Hi
I have a staight up Mandrake 6.1 installation
I am using gnome with Enlightenment wm and the shiny metal theme.
It refuses to save state on logging out, and puts the icon box way off  the top
of the screen and always brings up a terminal window on relogging in.
I have checked the icon box belongs to no wiondow group and closed the termianl
window and made save on exit. Also checked that nothing is listed in the start
up programs
Anyone any ideas where to  look next
?????
