Desktop Shortcuts

Hi,

I can't seem to get desktop shortcuts to show up.  I use the ln -s
command and the shortcuts appear in /.gnome-desktop and they work
correctly--they just aren't on the desktop.  If I try to "move" or
"copy" them from a file manager to the desktop by dragging, it says that
the file already exists.  I'm sure it exists, I just can't see it there.

Any ideas?
